Student's Robiraki, Opening the Hearth

November, called shimotsuki or "frost month" in Japanese, starts the winter cycle in the tearoom with the opening of the sunken hearth. Robiraki is considered the New Year's for tea practioners, as it is the first occasion on which the year's new tea is tasted.

Zenzai, the special sweet associated with this auspicious occasion, will be served with koicha on Saturday, Novomber 6. All are welcome, this gathering is open to both students, friends and families of the Foundation and the general public. Advanced Reservations are necessary. Thank you!

Tearoom Open to the Public: Open Hearth

Open to all, this monthly lecture-presentation tea gathering is a wonderful first-hand introduction to the Way of Tea. Come be a guest and savor the atmosphere and flavors of the tearoom. Explore the subtle variations of each season along with experiencing the underlying history and philosophy of the Way of Tea. Reservations are necessary and must be secured with a check. Tea Presentation at Nakatani Sokiku Tearoom Karaku-an

at CSU Sacramento 

Tuesday, November 16 & Wednesday, November 17

These popular monthly tea gatherings are held in the tearoom inside the Library at CSU Sacramento. The tearoom is named Karakuan 嘉楽庵 by Zabosai Oiemoto, sixteenth generation master of Urasenke Konnichian.

The tea presentation is open to university students and faculty as well as those who are interested in the Way of Tea.

Educational Gatherings

The Foundation welcomes school groups (kindergarten through university) and other groups for lecture-presentations at its tearoom facilities. These occasions are individually designed to the interests of each group such as language, literature, esthetics, philosophy, or history. Please telephone 415.433.6553 to make arrangements.

 

Northern California Chayu no Kai Events

The Northern California Chayu no Kai or Friends of Tea Association provides opportunities for camaraderie and the enjoyment of the culture of tea among younger practitioners of the Way of Tea. Chayu no Kai membership is open to all. Some activities are based on knowledge of tea practice. Friends of Tea events include regular kagetsu classes in addition to various workshops, chakai and chaji throughout the year. Please call the Foundation at 415.433.6553 for more information.
